STEVE POWERS

Stephen Powers (Philadelphia, 1968) vive e lavora a New York dal 1994. Appena trasferito ottiene visibilità come editore di On the Go Magazine e autore di diversi libri: The Art of Getting Over, First and Fifteenth e Studio Gangster.

Nel 1997 lavorando sotto l’acronimo ESPO (Exterior Surface Painting Outreach), intraprende una ambiziosa campagna di graffiti ricoprendo dozzine di saracinesche newyorkesi con grandi lettere cubitali. Dalla metà degli anni ’80, il suo lavoro si prende gioco del confine tra illegale e legale, creando graffiti che sembravano pubblicità legittime o dipingendo alla luce del giorno le facciate dei negozi abbandonati.

Il suo lavoro, sotto lo pseudonimo di ESPO, gli è valso notorietà non solo nel mondo dei graffiti, ma anche nel mondo dell'Arte Contemporanea. Dal 2000 Powers espone i suoi lavori in importanti gallerie come la Deitch Projects di New York City e nel 2001 partecipa alla 49ma Biennale di Venezia con un’imponente installazione dal titolo “Street Market”, insieme a Todd James e Barry McGee.

Negli ultimi anni Steve Powers ha esposto in prestigiose istituzioni internazionali tra cui: SFMOMA di San Francisco; Brooklyn Museum di New York; MOCA di Los Angeles; Garage Museum of Contemporary Art di Mosca; Contemporary Art Center di Cincinnati; Yerba Buena Art Center di San Francisco; Orange County Museum of Art di Newport Beach; Triennale di Milano; MACRO di Roma; Padiglione della Cultura Brasiliana a San Paolo; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts di Philadelphia; Liverpool Biennal; City Art Center di Dublino. Il suo lavoro fa parte della collezione permanente del Philadelphia Museum Of Art.
